Organization and the Power of Now vs Someday
When someone says to me “Oh, I’ll get to that someday”, what they’re really saying is I have no plan to take care of that whatsoever. Really, never. Someday is a filler word; something you say when you are stalling. Something you say when you don’t know what to say. UM…AHHH…WELL…SOMEDAY. Someday might as well be described as never-day; don’t-you-think-for-a-second-I-actually-plan-to-make-that-happen day. It’s up there with elusive, magical animals; a phoenix, a centaur, a mermaid, a dragon; SOMEDAY. Ohhh it sounds so intriguing! That thing called SOMEDAY. I hope to have one too! Someday.
Ok, so let’s get real. Take that seductive sounding someday out of your vocabulary and put it in the trash. What does that leave you with? Now. I love the option of NOW. It’s immediate; there’s no questioning involved, no guesswork. Choosing the future – even the immediate future – instead of now, only delays the inevitable. I’ll make my bed…soon… Really? Really you will? Or will you just wait until it’s nighttime and vwalah! The bed does not need making anymore!?
Here’s the thing about not doing something in the moment it needs to be done: you generally double the time it takes you to do something. Example: if you place a dirty dish in the sink instead of just placing it directly in the dishwasher, you have to make an extra trip to come back, pick it up and load it in the dishwasher. It’s worth repeating: If you do things in the moment they actually need to be done, you save yourself time. You could throw your coat on a chair when you come home, or you could hang it up…both take pretty much the same effort but one creates a nice, organized visual and one does not. You get my drift.
Nike has been on to it all along: just do it. (Now, that is.)
